Honi Borden, (Ommehoni Motarefi-Borden)
is the owner of Holeco® Wellness Medi Spa and the
founder of holeco® life "rooted beauty" products. Honi
has been in the beauty industry for over 18 years, working
as a licensed electrologist while putting herself through
school. After graduating from George Washington University
with bachelors in psychology, she pursued masters in clinical
therapy and counseling from Johns Hopkins University, and
onto post advanced studies in existential therapy and counseling.
Honi worked with refugee populations as a clinical and group
counselor, helping them get acculturated into their new life
in America.
In
2001, after 9/11, the boarders got closed and her refugee
program got shot down. Having lost her job, Honi opened
her Electrolysis business in December 2001. To expand
her knowledge and provide greater results for her clients,
in 2005, Honi received her board certified laser certificate
from Rocky Mountain Laser Clinic and in the summer of
2006, she opened her own practice, Derma Hair Care,
in Falls Church, VA. This new Mindful Medi Spa was
founded with the desire to blend modern beauty technology
with the mindfulness of authentic personal care, inner
beauty and compassion.
As
a woman business owner, busy mom of 2 boys and wife,
Honi was inspired by her personal experiences to make
changes that would improve her health and well being
along with the health and well being of her family
and her clients. After dealing with her son's hormonal
imbalance and endocrine disruption along with her husband
and younger son's highly sensitive skin and dermatitis,
Honi began to examine more closely the connection between
their health issues and every
day personal care & home products
they were using.
Honi
began extensive research into what was in the products
and learned that most body and skin care products contained
chemical preservatives and ingredients that could caused
harmful side effects. Honi was horrified and empowered
by this new knowledge and switched all of the personal
care and household products in her home to chemical
free, natural and eco-friendly options. Those personal
experiences planted the seed for her new natural body
care, makeup line as well as superfoods, holeco®
life, and inspired Honi to make her medi spa completely
non-toxic and green.
Honi
became highly aware of the interconnectedness between
our health and the health of the planet and become
eco-conscious in all aspects of her life. When Derma
Hair Care opened, all of her beauty and skin care items
were chemical free and made from all natural and organic
ingredients and used organic cotton sheets and robes
in her treatment rooms. She used only green cleaning
supplies and soon switched over to green powered web
hosting, renewable energy, FSC certified printing.
Before she knew it, her entire spa had become Green!
In
March 2007, after a thorough and extensive screening
process of weeks, her center was honored to become the
very first Green Wellness Center and Medi Spa in the
US recognized by Green America as a socially responsiblegreen
company. With this recognition, the spa found its way
to into the National Green Pages Directory. Soon after,
the spa was recognized with a Gold Certification from
GenGreen Business as an eco-friendly medi spa. In the
August of 2008, Derma Hair Care changed it's name to
Holeco®
Wellness Medi Spa to capture more authentically the vision
that Honi had to create a nourishing, holistic based practice
that offered comprehensive, eco-conscious medi spa services,
detox services and healing modalities such as reiki, reflexology
and chakra balancing. The word Holeco® is a combination
of the words holistic and eco-friendly where US patent
trademark was filed.
Honi
saw her business served more than just medical aesthetic
treatments and the need to becoming more holistic was
necessary for integration. She began studying holistic
energy healing and reiki under Suchinta Abhayaranta,
founder of Creative Holistic Integration and soon integrated
these new healing modalities into her work with clients.
Now an advanced third level reiki practitioner, Honi
incorporates her knowledge of more traditional energy
work with her modern and technical medical spa skills.
Her goal is to nurture and encourage each client to look
and feel beautiful and to be rooted in a beauty that
comes from within.
Over
the years, Honi has sought to align her self and her
business with those who share her holistic and eco-conscious
understanding of health and wellness. In the Fall of
2009 Holeco® moved
from Falls Church, VA to a more green, metro accessible
location in the Friendship Heights neighborhood in Washington,
DC in the space next door to the National Integrated
Health Associates offices which offer a complete integrated
holistic health care and biological dental services.
In
early 2010, Honi launched the holeco® life product
line of personal "rooted
beauty" items which include skin lotion, body oils, soaps,
eco-mineral sunscreen and foundation, all natural and
chemical free make up. The line includes superfoods rich
in anti-oxidants such as green teas and even has a line
of seven versions of raw, vegan chakra inspired chocolates.
The products are designed with a holistic vision to help
improve the quality of life for the person that purchases
the products and for others in need around the world.
A portion of all proceeds supports the International
Lifeline Fund's projects of clean water and fuel efficient
stoves that helps improve the quality of life of women
and families in developing countries in Africa. Honi
believes that when we connect with a deeper, more "rooted
beauty" we are able to recognize that our personal health
and well being is also connected to the health and well
being of the planet as a whole. Through the holeco® life
project, Honi hopes to empower, educate, and encourage
others to live with more compassion for themselves, other
people and the planet and to inspire others to live a
more mindful life that taps into the beauty within.
